For Olympians Ashley Wagner and Eddy Alvarez, the dream was always to stand on a podium at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.
They did that, each winning a medal in team events. But another dream came true during their three weeks in Russia nearly two years ago: They met each other.
"You go to the Olympics and your mind is set on what your goals have been for your entire life," Alvarez said. "But when you meet someone, you just know. Our connection was instant. We found ourselves speaking to each other more and more while we were there."
Wagner, 24, and the 26-year-old Alvarez have been together ever since. But they're far from inseparable: Their demanding (and nearly opposite) schedules wreak havoc on when and how they can see each other. Their relationship is built on time-zone calculations, FaceTime check-ins and a want to support the other, no matter what is going on in their lives.
"We have a lot working against us; it's a huge learning process," the Los Angeles-based Wagner said. "It's a difficult relationship when you look at how it all works. He just understands what kind of stress is involved in skating. At the end of the day, we're working on this together."

Making it work

Olympic fans know Alvarez as the short track speed skater who had high hopes for Sochi. Winner of three World Cup medals in the lead-up to Russia, a series of falls beset his hopes of an individual medal at the Games. He did win silver, however, as a part of the United States' 5,000-meter relay team.
But after the Olympics, there was no more skating for Alvarez, who turned to another love of his: baseball. The past two years, the Miami native has played minor league ball in the Chicago White Sox organization. He finished the 2015 season with the Winston-Salem Dash, a Class A Advanced team, hitting .325 in 34 games with the club.
Alvarez' shift from skates to a mitt has made things more challenging for the couple -- on the surface. At one point last summer, they saw each other just twice in six months. As soon as the figure skating season wraps up for her, spring training begins for him.
It's a challenge the two Olympic athletes accept wholeheartedly, though it has brought about its fair share of relationship hurdles.
"In a way it works, and in a way it doesn't at all," Wagner reasoned. "Summertime is my time to see him in whatever small town he's playing baseball in. We try not to go more than six weeks or two months without seeing each other."
"Even though we have very similar lives, it's also very new to us," Alvarez added. "It's the first time I've dated a high-class athlete, and she…fully understands what competition is and what I go through to be ready for it.
"But with me now playing baseball, it's all new to us. It is 160 games, and it's straight on. I really can't do anything for those five or six months. Everything has been a stepping stone and a learning process."

Love at first…

"I actually noticed her first. I will take full credit for that."
Wagner and Alvarez were basically strangers before Sochi, having only seen each other in passing at a photo shoot for the Olympics in the spring of 2013. The first time he watched her skate was during the 2014 U.S. Championships in Boston, watching on TV after the short track speed skating trials.
Weeks later in Sochi, Wagner had just landed from team processing in Munich when she bounded onto the TODAY show set for an interview, making a beeline for good friend and teammate Jeremy Abbott. Alvarez was there, too.
"I saw her, and she instantly caught my eye," he remembered. "I knew that she was someone that I wanted to meet immediately."
"It was love at first sight for her," he continued, ribbing Wagner on the other end of our phone conversation.
"If this is how this interview is going to go, I'm not doing it!" she retorted, laughing.
Alvarez joked that Wagner was "late as usual" the day of the TODAY appearance, meaning any chit-chatting that could have been done on set was cut short. Wagner recalled her excitement to finally be at the Olympics, and a tunnel vision to catch up with Abbott.
They finally met a few days later inside a cafeteria in the athlete's village.
"I'm not always the best at meeting new people, because I can be sort of shy," Wagner explained. "We were at a table in the cafeteria and people in our group peeled off one by one until it was just the two of us. It was just so easy."
During their downtime from competition, Wagner and Alvarez became "Sochi buddies." They'd eat together in the cafeteria, hang out in the game room, watch movies and -- sometimes -- talk about their events.
"He would complain to me how bad the ice was for them, and (how) for us it was so amazing," Wagner said.
The short track speed skating events were held at the Iceberg Skating Palace -- the same site as the figure skating competition.
"We did what we could with the circumstances," Alvarez said of their time together in Sochi. "It just kind of escalated."

Finding their stride

It certainly hasn't all been smooth sailing (skating?) for Wagner and Alvarez, however. Distance makes communicating hard sometimes, as they often don't see each other for long stretches. On top of that, each is squarely focused on individual pursuits: One is chasing another Olympic Games, while the other has his eyes set on making the major leagues.
Kristi Yamaguchi, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist, can understand. She met her husband Bret Hedican, a hockey player, in Albertville.
"The tough part is the traveling and the scheduling and being OK with a long-distance relationship for a while," Yamaguchi said. "We had very similar schedules, where we were on the road most of the time. I think we understood where our priorities were. You learn along the way.
"Being an athlete and understanding what the other person is going through, you know that it's all a part of the business," Yamaguchi continued. "To have someone that understands your lifestyle and what it's like to live on the road, there's a mutual understanding and a mutual respect that goes along with that."
Wagner has gone to several of Alvarez' baseball games over the last year, even throwing out the first pitch at one that he caught. ("She actually threw a strike," he said. "No, it was definitely a ball," she countered.)
This fall, Alvarez was at a Halloween party while Wagner competed at Skate Canada. Instead of mingling with the other guests, he was camped out in the kitchen, watching a livestream of the event on his computer.
"I want to keep up with what she's doing, no matter where she is. I'm always going to be 'Team Ashley,'" Alvarez said. "She needs to know that she has a support system."
U.S. pairs skater Marissa Castelli is one of Wagner's closest friends, and actually helped introduce the couple in Sochi. She says she couldn't be happier for them.
"Eddy is definitely a positive force in Ashley's life," Castelli wrote in an email. "He brings a level of understanding to what Ashley does on the ice because he has been in similar situations before."
Being with someone who understands the time commitment involved with being a professional athlete is, Alvarez said, a refreshing change from the past.
"They (past girlfriends) don't understand what it is to dedicate your life to something like this," Alvarez said. "At the end of the day, we have our careers that we have 100 percent invested in, and we get that for each other. But we're learning how to build a life together around all of that instead of ignoring it."
"We haven't had the opportunity to settle and just relax and be with each other," Wagner echoed. "But that's what we signed up for. We know it's going to be like that at least for the next year. We get it. There's no one else that I would rather do it with."

A great pair. A great pairs team?

For now, the two fly by the seat of their pants: A weekend in Los Angeles where Wagner lives, or a few days in Miami -- one of her favorite cities -- where Alvarez's family is.
A shared sense of humor binds them, it seems. Much of our interview was spent with one of them making a joke at the other's expense. He characterizes her as "a big dork."
Would they make a good pairs team for Pyeongchang in 2018?
"We'd kill each other," Alvarez said, laughing. "It wouldn't be pretty."
"I couldn't do it. I couldn't do it," Wagner said. "When I explain things, he doesn't understand me. Our brains function entirely different."
But at least at this point, their different approaches have made for a good team -- and a great couple. They even made it through their first interview together without incident.
"We'll probably argue about it later," Alvarez joked.

Eddy Alvarez: Olympic Profile
